Stats Wales does not just give information about the WIMD it gives information on just about anything you could think of. It is a great place to look for information for an enquiry or investigation.
Here is some information to help you understand how people in Wales compare to those in other parts of the UK in terms of welfare and poverty. You can check out the full data by using the link button.
As well as providing the data the StatsWales site will also draw graphs for you so it is a very useful source (but it can be a little bit complex so we have selected some information for you to help to show you how Wales compares to the rest of the UK in terms of wealth and its opposite poverty.

The table above is for earnings – people earn when they are working. Average income would be lower because it includes those not working such as those on a pension, students or those who cannot work due to disability, illness, caring for young children or those between jobs.
The UK equivalent of StatsWales is the Office for National Statistics or the ONS for short. The ONS is actually located in South Wales in Newport.

Average figures do not reflect the full picture as there will be a range from lowest to the highest.
In Wales a teacher could earn between £22,467 and £51,148.
In Wales a head teacher could earn between £44,102 and £108,283
In Wales a NHS nurse could earn between £15,516 and £99,437.
In Wales a NHS Hospital Doctor could earn between £23,091 and £180,810 made up of £103,490 (basic salary) + £77,320 (Clinical Excellence Awards). Extra additional salary could be paid for the taking on of management responsibility and/or teaching.
In Wales a salaried GP doctor could earn between £55,965 and £84,445. A partner in a practice would expect to make more than this due to the additional responsibilities and risks (these however could mean that a partnered GP works much longer hours and could technically receive less pay than the salaried GP’s the employ).
Hopefully from what you see above you realise that careers based on a good education receive far higher pay than those based on a lower level of success in school and in ongoing education.
But where would all of this put us on a global scale?

One thing that is clear; when we compare ourselves to others in the world even if we are at the lowest level in the UK we are nearly always going to be in the richest 20% globally.
Sometimes numbers do not really help us to understand what all of this means so in the attached article we are going to look at an exciting new tool called DOLLAR STREET from the team at Gapminder.org the place to go for the coolest numbers and graphs on the world wide web.
Dollar Street KS3 Link - Click below
Try using the gapminder website graphs to see how countries like the UK have become richer over time.
Try comparing two countries at different levels of wealth like the UK and Uganda. You can highlight countries by selecting them on the right hand side of the graphs.
Pretty cool for graphs!
